Minimum order quantity in acrylic fabrication is a recovery threshold for non-recurring setup: programming, nesting, fixturing, first-article inspection and a casting or cutting changeover. Our production MOQ is 20 pieces per design or specification, and bulk sheet orders start at 10 sheets. This is why “can you do five?” is not usually refused on principle — it is quoted at a price that reflects setup spread over five pieces. Buyers often find the answer acceptable once they see it, particularly for replacements and prototypes.
Five legitimate ways to order under the minimum
- Order it as a sample or prototype. Pre-production samples and one-off prototypes are quoted separately from production runs. Samples ship in 48 hours from drawing approval.
- Consolidate designs into one order. The minimum is per design or specification, but several designs sharing a material, thickness and finish share nesting, setup and one shipment.
- Standardise thickness and grade across the assembly. Parts that share a sheet nest together; parts that each need their own material do not.
- Accept a blanket order with staged releases. Commit to the quantity, take delivery in batches. Setup is recovered once and you avoid holding all the stock.
- Relax non-functional tolerances and finishes. A polished edge or a tight tolerance that nothing depends on adds setup and inspection. See appearance standards to specify only what you need.
Sheet MOQ works differently from parts MOQ
On material, the minimum is about handling and changeover rather than machining setup. Bulk sheet orders start at 10 sheets, in common sizes such as 1220 × 2440 mm, 2000 × 1000 mm and 2050 × 3050 mm, with programme pricing from 200 sheets. Our own Suzhou line casts Calypto acrylic sheet in 1–30 mm at 135 tonnes per month, so a standard clear grade is a scheduling question rather than a purchasing one; a non-standard colour or a branded material such as Mitsubishi or Lucite has to be produced to a changeover or bought in, and its own minimum applies. What to send so a low-quantity enquiry gets a real answer
Low-quantity requests are usually answered badly because they arrive without enough information to price setup. Send the drawing or dimensioned sketch, the material and thickness, the quantity now and the realistic quantity over twelve months, which dimensions are functional, the finish required, and the destination. Why do Chinese suppliers quote very different minimums for the same part?
Because minimums encode each factory’s setup cost and scheduling reality, not an industry rule. A shop with idle capacity and simple fixturing quotes a low minimum; one running long production batches quotes a high one. Ask what the minimum is recovering rather than treating it as fixed.
Can I order a small quantity now and more later at the same price?
Ask for a blanket order with staged releases. You commit to the total quantity, setup is recovered once, and deliveries are scheduled. Material grades are locked to the part number for reorders so later batches match the first.
