Clear acrylic balusters and handrail on a marble staircase

Clear acrylic balusters — machined, polished and drilled to the stair pitch

An acrylic handrail or balustrade infill is a PMMA element used where a rail or barrier should stay visually open. It weighs about half of glass at the same size, resists impact far better, will not shatter into shards, and can be cold-bent to a radius of roughly 300 × thickness — so curved runs do not need segmented glass. We fabricate 3–100 mm thick, up to 3000 × 2000 mm per panel, with diamond-polished exposed edges.

What railing contractors send us

What a balustrade package needs before cutting

  • Baluster spacing and hole pattern. Infill panels are drilled to your post centres. Send the setting-out and we return a panel schedule.
  • Radius on curved runs. Cold bending covers radii down to about 300 × thickness; tighter curves are thermoformed. Tell us the radius early — it changes the panel split.
  • Edge exposure. Any edge within reach is diamond-polished. This is a safety and durability point, not just appearance.
  • Thermal movement. Holes are oversized and slotted. A panel pinched between rigid fixings will craze at the hole.

Where acrylic is the wrong choice

The limits, stated up front

Barrier loading, guarding heights and fall protection are set by local code and engineered per project. We fabricate to the detail your engineer specifies and supply material datasheets for the submittal — we do not certify the barrier system. Where code requires laminated safety glass, specify glass.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask before ordering

Can acrylic replace glass in a balustrade?

In many interior and decorative applications, yes — it is lighter, impact-resistant and does not shard. Whether it is permitted in a given barrier depends on local code and the engineered load case, which your engineer confirms.

How tight can a curved handrail be?

Cold bending handles radii down to roughly 300 × thickness. Tighter curves are thermoformed in our ovens. Send the radius and thickness together and we will tell you which route applies.

Do you drill to our post spacing?

Yes. Send the setting-out drawing or the post centres and we return a panel schedule with the hole pattern for approval before cutting.

Will the panels yellow outdoors?

Cast acrylic is UV-stable and holds clarity outdoors for years, unlike many other clear plastics. Surface abrasion and cleaning practice, not sunlight, are the usual causes of a tired-looking panel.
