Sourcing Acrylic from China for Australia: ChAFTA and ISPM 15

Large clear acrylic panels enclosing an automation cell

Buying acrylic (Perspex) sheet or fabricated acrylic parts from China for delivery in Australia: specifying the sheet, building-code questions, ChAFTA paperwork, timber packaging rules and the strong Australian sun.

Reply within 12 hours · production from 20 pieces per design

For an Australian order of acrylic from China, four details make the difference. Ask for a ChAFTA certificate of origin with the shipment so your broker can claim the preferential tariff under the China–Australia Free Trade Agreement. Make sure any solid-timber crates and pallets are ISPM 15 treated and marked, or the shipment can be held at the border for biosecurity treatment. If the acrylic is used in a building, check the fire requirements of the National Construction Code before choosing a grade. And because Australian sun is intense, specify cast sheet for outdoor parts and allow for thermal movement.

Paperwork and border checks

Item Why it matters What to ask for
ChAFTA certificate of origin Needed to claim the preferential tariff on Chinese-origin goods Issued for the shipment and sent with the documents
Timber packaging Untreated solid timber can be held for inspection or treatment ISPM 15 marked crates and pallets, or packaging the rules exempt, such as plywood
Commercial invoice and packing list Customs clearance and GST on import Matching descriptions, quantities and values
Classification Duty and statistics Your broker confirms the code; PMMA sheet usually falls under 3920.51

Rules change. Your customs broker and the Department of Agriculture’s import conditions are the final reference for each shipment.

Sun, heat and Australian sites

Cast acrylic handles UV well and does not yellow quickly outdoors. See our guide to acrylic UV resistance outdoors. The bigger risk on Australian sites is heat. Dark tints in direct sun run far hotter than the air, and long panels move. A 2000 mm panel grows about 4 mm for a 30 °C rise, using a typical coefficient for cast acrylic of 7 × 10⁻⁵ per °C. Slot the holes, leave expansion gaps and keep panels below the continuous service limit of about 80 °C. See acrylic temperature limits.

Freight and quoting

  • Ports. Sydney (Port Botany), Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle handle most container freight from China. Name the delivery address so the quote covers the last leg.
  • Freight is volume. Acrylic ships by volume more than weight. Cut panels can cost less to ship than full sheets with offcuts.
  • Incoterms. Compare FOB, CIF and DDP quotes on the same basis; see landed cost of shipping acrylic from China.
  • Naming. Australian drawings often say “Perspex”. That usually just means acrylic; see acrylic, plexiglass, Lucite and Perspex.

What we supply, and what we do not

AcrylicFabWorks, the acrylic division of SinoPlastix, supplies Calypto cast acrylic sheet and fabricated acrylic parts from one ISO 9001-certified plant in Suzhou, China. The sheet is cast on our own line at 135 tonnes a month, in 1–30 mm. Full sheets are quoted from 10 sheets; cut panels and parts from 20 pieces per design. Samples take 48 hours and production 7 days from drawing approval. We have no Australian office, stock or installation team. For one-off local jobs an Australian fabricator is quicker; for repeat production, send us the drawing. We work in acrylic only.

FAQ

Do I need a certificate of origin to import acrylic from China into Australia?

To claim the preferential tariff under ChAFTA, yes. Ask for a ChAFTA certificate of origin with the shipment and let your broker confirm the code and rate.

Do wooden crates need treatment for Australia?

Solid timber packaging must meet ISPM 15 (treated and marked), or the shipment may be held for inspection or treatment. Processed wood such as plywood is generally exempt.

Is Perspex the same as acrylic in Australia?

Yes. Perspex is a trade name commonly used in Australia for acrylic (PMMA) sheet.

Do you have stock in Australia?

No. We ship from Suzhou, China, on FOB, CIF or DDP terms.
